The Install: The Owner Tax Ledger in Home Services
Monday's teardown gave you the Owner Tax Ledger. This Install rides shotgun into a home services company, where the owner is the estimator, the dispatcher, and collections, and the office for all three jobs is the truck seat. What goes on the card, why the Friday circle usually lands on quoting, and the Standard Ten, one page that prices your ten most common jobs so quotes stop waiting on your evening.
A notecard clipped to the visor. Here is the ledger at work in home services.
Marcus runs his company from a truck parked in his own driveway. Three jobs before seven in the morning, and the card catches every one of them. Same tool as Monday, walked into a different business.
What Goes on the Card
In home services the owner tax rides shotgun as three jobs: you are the only one allowed to price work, the only one who can build the board, and the only one willing to make the awkward money call. Every quote, the morning board, the mid job text, chasing invoices. Write the real minutes, including the drive and the callback. Twenty-four minutes on the board every morning is over a hundred hours a year of unpaid dispatching.
The Friday Circle
Count the card and circle the most frequent item. In most shops the circle lands on quoting, because about eighty percent of what you price is the same ten jobs on repeat. The fix is the Standard Ten: your ten most common jobs down the left side, a price or a tight range next to each, what bumps a job up a tier, and one line at the bottom. Anything custom, and anything over 2,500 dollars, still comes to the owner.
The Handoff
Your office manager or lead tech quotes the standard ten on the spot, same day, from the page. This handoff pays twice, because the first company to put a real number in front of the customer usually wins the job. If a number on the page turns out wrong, you fix the page, you do not blame the person. Then walk through the first three quotes together so you can hear how they will say it.
