The Install: The Candidate Offer Stack in a Child Care Center

This week’s teardown found a dental practice losing about twenty two thousand dollars a month to one empty operatory. This Install walks The Candidate Offer Stack into a child care center, where coverage is fixed by law, so the layer everyone writes vaguely is the one that has to be written down by name.

The Install

A closed room is a number nobody has written down. Here is the stack at work in a child care center.

Harborlight Early Learning is one site, six classrooms, licensed for seventy four children. One of its two toddler rooms has been closed since the middle of June, because the lead teacher gave notice and the posting has been up ever since. Twelve seats at one thousand and seventy five dollars a month is twelve thousand nine hundred dollars a month of enrollment that cannot be sold, and there is a waitlist for it. A composite built from real centers and real 2026 data, not a client.

01

Twenty Plans, Three Columns

Price the hole before you price the raise. One day of that empty seat’s work, times the days it has sat empty, written down somewhere you will see it. The lead role had been posted at seventeen fifty an hour against a market of twenty one, which is three fifty an hour, forty hours, fifty two weeks: about six hundred and seven dollars a month. Six hundred and seven against twelve thousand nine hundred. The raise that felt unaffordable is four point seven percent of the room that is not being sold, and those two numbers had never been on the same page, because one of them is a line on the profit and loss and the other one had never been written down anywhere.

02

The Eight Percent Rule

Then change layer four. Monday’s pressure valve says that when you are a person down you cut the schedule. A licensed center cannot: ratio is not a preference, it is the license. Down a teacher there are exactly three options, float somebody in, close a room, or the director stands in it, and every experienced candidate already knows that, which is why a vague answer does not read as reassuring. It reads as a warning.

03

Four Moves for a Circled Row

So write the coverage order down, by name, and put it in the offer: when we are short the float teacher covers first, then the assistant director, then me; you will not be moved into an age group you are not trained for, and you will not lose your break to cover ratio; if we run out of people we close a room. Fund the number honestly, because tuition caps the classroom: forty dollars a month on the toddler rate is four hundred and eighty dollars from the twelve families already enrolled, about eighty percent of the raise before the closed room reopens at all, and nine hundred and sixty when it does. Put the offer where the people are, the state early childhood registry, the community college ECE program by calling the coordinator rather than emailing the general address, and the local early childhood groups, posted by name. Then keep the promise: fifteen minutes on the calendar every weekday, and a yes or no inside forty eight hours from a person, including the no, written once so it never has to be composed at four o’clock.

Previous Episode

Nobody Applied. Again.

This week’s anchor teardown. Two doctors, 1.9 million a year, and an operatory that has sat dark for five months because the resumes stopped coming. The problem is not the job ad, it is a 2019 offer competing in a 2026 labor market. The Candidate Offer Stack rebuilds it in five layers.
